01 higher than "O" and "E" blocks for clearance. I worried about scope clearance and on suggestion of the builder I went with I used a set of Lyman blocks made by Steve Earle Products. It has that antique, yet sleek, art deco look to it. People are mystified by the Hubble scope riding the top of the gun.

It gets a lot of attention at the range when I take it. Its great fun to shoot and great tool to proof reloads for my iron sighted Garands and 03's. The Unertl for all appearances matches the dimensions of the 8X the only difference being the rear eyepiece is a 10X piece of glass. Mine is just a clone using a 10X Unertl Target and a well barreled 1903 in C stock. I built myself an M1941 last fall when my shop ended up having two Unertls on the shelf at a reasonable price. So it might be one area I can give back so to speak if anyone has any questions. The Marines had investigated notching the bolts so they would clear the scopes, but they found it to not be necessary and just easier to manually move the scope with each shot.Īs crappy as I am with M40's, which is very obvious.

If you wanted to cycle the bolt without firing a round, you can push the scope forward, cycle the bolt, then pull the scope back. You then cycled the bolt, and manually pull the scope back to take the next shot.

So the scope is forward in the sliding mounts after you take a shot. When the Marines fired the rifle, the recoil would push the rifle back, but the scope remained mostly in the same place. The whole scope moves in those mounts and you can push it back and forth, but it still maintains zero.īut that is why there are stops on the scope. Otherwise the adjustments are not internal. These are those early scopes where the tubes are fixed, and to adjust elevation or windage, the whole scope moves in the mount.

Depending on how the scope is zero'd, it is possible the bolt will hit the scope when you open it. Your scope came without the spring to return it to battery, or is it just optional to use one?The Marines chose not to order the springs on the Unertls scopes.
